Acids, Bases and Salts: A High-Value DDCET Chemistry Topic

4 min read 2026-10-20StudyDDCET Team

Acids, Bases and Salts carries more weight than any other Chemistry topic in BE-01. Here is what to focus on.

Among the Chemistry topics in BE-01, Acids, Bases and Salts carries the largest share — ahead of Chemical Reactions and Equations, and Metals and Non-metals. It is also one of the most predictable topics in the paper, which makes it a smart place to secure marks.

What to focus on

  • The pH scale and indicators — what acidic, neutral and basic values mean, and which indicator changes colour where.
  • Strong versus weak acids and bases — the difference in ionisation, and what it means for conductivity and pH.
  • Neutralisation and salt formation — acid plus base gives salt plus water, and the common salts with their uses.
  • Everyday examples — antacids, soap, baking soda, washing soda and bleaching powder, with their formulas.
  • Common names and formulas — a large share of MCQs simply ask you to match them.

Chemical Reactions and Equations

The second Chemistry topic rewards balance. Be comfortable identifying reaction types — combination, decomposition, displacement, double displacement and redox — and balancing a simple equation. If you can spot the reaction type at a glance, most questions answer themselves.

Metals and Non-metals

Know the reactivity series, the difference in physical properties, and the common alloys. This topic pairs naturally with Acids, Bases and Salts, because many reaction questions involve metals reacting with acids.

How to make Chemistry stick

  • Build a single sheet of common names, formulas and one-line uses, and revise it before every Chemistry session.
  • Practise balancing equations until it is automatic — it appears across all three Chemistry topics.
  • Group your revision by reaction type rather than by chapter; MCQs test the pattern, not the page.

Chemistry is a smaller share of BE-01 than Physics, but it is more fact-based and faster to secure once your reference sheet is complete.
